The Way It Is...
In 1993, the small town of Kadima in Israel was the epicentre of a wave of giant humanoid encounters. The oversized aliens appeared only to women and invariably communicated telepathically. They also had a tendency to leave crop circles and traces of cadmium behind them.
The giants arrived early on the morning of March 20. Kadima resident Tsiporet Carmel woke at dawn to find her house bathed in brilliant light. A silver silo-like object was standing in the field outside projecting five powerful beams of light into the sky.
The object suddenly doubled in size and a 7-ft-tall figure appeared besides it. The figure wore a one-piece silver suit and a veiled helmet like a beekeeper's hat. Carmel went outside and challenged it.
"Why don't you take off your hat so I can see your face?" she asked.
"That's the way it is," replied the giant.
Carmel felt compelled to return indoors and did not see the entity depart. A 15-ft-wide crop circle containing traces of pure silicon was later found in the field where the 'silo' had landed.
Several other crop circles appeared in the area, soaked in a red liquid that made investigators feel nauseous. The liquid was analysed by the National Biological Laboratory at Ness Tziona and found to consist mainly of cadmium.
Strangers in the Night
Town treasurer Shosh Vahud was the next to experience a close encounter. She woke during the night of March 31 to find the house shaking and a 7-ft-tall silver-suited humanoid standing besides her bed.
"Do not be afraid. I will not harm you," declared the giant, gliding around the room as though "floating on his shoes".
The next morning, Vahud wondered if it had all been a dream. But two crop circles, 11 and 20 feet in diameter, had appeared in the field outside her window. Investigators discovered traces of silicon and cadmium in both of them.
Rishon-le-Zion resident Batya Shimon had a similar encounter one night in May. She woke to find a giant silver humanoid "with fascinating blue eyes" floating around her bedroom. The next night, the entity reappeared. Shimon followed it outside and saw a hovering "mushroom shaped craft, surrounded by searchlights".
Two more giants stepped out of a hatch in the craft and shone a blinding light at her. Then she suddenly found herself back in bed next to her husband, who was still sleeping. "Do not be afraid," soothed the beings as they floated out through the window on a beam of light.
The next morning, Shimon found traces of a strange powder on the bedroom floor. It was composed mainly of cadmium.
The Unfriendly Giant
At Bourgata on May 30, housewife Hannah Somech was woken at 3am by the sound of her dog barking frantically in the garden. She went downstairs and looked out through the kitchen window only to see her pet being hurled through the air into a wall.
Cadmium sulphide - used in paint making.
Somech opened the back door and confronted the 8-foot-tall silver-suited figure who was now examining her pick-up truck.
"What did you do to my dog?" she demanded.
"He disturbed me, as you do now," retorted the giant. "Go away - I'm busy. I could crush you like an ant if I wanted to!"
Somech ran upstairs to fetch her husband, but the giant had vanished by the time he got up. Huge footprints were found in the garden together with a 15-foot-wide circle soaked with a red liquid rich in cadmium.
Return Visit
One night towards the end of May, Batya Shimon woke to find that the two giants who had previously visited her were once again in her bedroom. One stayed by the bedside waving his hand over her husband's head, while the other explored the apartment. Both "shone like neon" and wore skin-tight white outfits.
Presently, the second giant returned to the bedroom and gestured to its companion. Both giants glided into the adjacent room (in which Shimon's son was sleeping) and stared in apparent amazement at the aquarium. Then a beam of light shone through the kitchen window and the beings floated out along it into a mushroom-shaped craft.
The next morning, a yellow powder smelling of sulphur was found spread across the bookshelves.
Ancient Astronauts?
Proponents of the ancient astronaut theory often quote the passage in Genesis relatiing how the Nephilim - the sons of God - descended from heaven to wed the "daughters of Adam".
Zecharia Sitchin (the most scholarly of the ancient astronaut theorists) takes issue with the standard translation of 'Nephilim' as 'giant'; pointing out that in the original Hebrew the word simply means "those who had come down".
Putting such textual quibbles aside, the giants who appeared in Israel in 1993 showed no desire to wed the daughters of Adam, despite a tendency to visit their bedrooms in the middle of the night. Indeed, their behaviour seems entirely irrational.
The giants who entered Batya Shimon's apartment were able to keep her husband unconscious, yet they allowed her to wake up and see them. The giant in Hannah Somech's garden claimed to be "busy" yet vanished as soon as she fetched her spouse. Indeed, the entities seemed to have no obvious purpose in visiting other than to display themselves to the witnesses.
Evidence - But of what?
While the crop circles and cadmium traces found at the sites of the encounters indicate that something had happened, they do not oblige us to take the women's stories at face value. Crop circles are easily faked and cadmium easily obtained. However, the consistency in the evidence does suggest that the encounters were linked to a common cause.
Were the women victims of a bizarre psychological experiment? Was the whole affair a locally organised hoax? Or had the Nephilim really returned to Earth just to snoop around people's bedrooms and marvel at their aquariums?
