Red Giants
The sun-soaked Canary Islands may seem an incongruous setting for an alien reconnaissance mission. Nevertheless, in summer 1976 Gran Canaria was visited by a pair of very unusual tourists in a very unusual flying machine.
On the evening of June 22nd, Dr Francesco Padron Leon was travelling by taxi to visit a patient at Las Rosas. Rounding a corner, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes. A transparent sphere the size of a two-storey building was hovering over the road ahead. The temperature inside the cab suddenly dropped and the radio went dead.
Shivering with cold, the men stared in disbelief at the craft, which was emitting an eerie electric-blue glow. Two 9-ft-tall humanoids "dressed entirely in red" stood inside it, facing one another across an instrument console.
Inflation
A tall semi-transparent tube within the craft began to pump out a blue gas. As the sphere filled with the gas, it slowly expanded like a giant soap bubble. When it reached the size of a twenty-storey building, it began to ascend "slowly and majestically". Then it emitted a high-pitched whistle and shot off towards Tenerife, morphing into a streamlined spindle shape as it flew.
Sphere, There, and Everywhere
The local radio station received multiple reports of the craft from across the Canary Islands. The crew of a Spanish Navy corvette and the passengers aboard a civilian ferry both saw it hurtling over the sea. It was also seen hovering over an onion field where a circular patch of crop was later found destroyed.
A lengthy investigation by the local authorities concluded that "the fact that a very strange and peculiar aerial phenomena occurred on the night of 22 June is a true and proven fact, as incredible as its behaviour and conditions may seem".
