The Brains in the Lane
California has a reputation for attracting unconventional visitors. Nevertheless, even Californians must be taken aback when confronted by a pair of disembodied brains. Such was the bizarre situation faced by two Palos Verdes residents on the night of August 17, 1971.
That evening, John Hodges and Peter Rodriguez had been visiting a mutual friend in Dapple Grey Lane. They left at 2am, and were about to drive away when they noticed two blue objects resembling human brains sitting in the road ahead. One was the size of the basketball, the other somewhat larger. Both were surrounded by an eerie localised mist.
The men stared at the objects for a few moments then went on their way. Hodges dropped Rodriguez off then drove straight home. The journey should have taken him 10 minutes, but he did not arrive at his apartment until 4:30am.
The Webbed Ones
Hodges later underwent hypnotic regression to explore the period of missing time. He recalled arriving home to find the brains lying in wait for him. The next thing he remembered was being inside a "control room" lined with computer consoles. The brains were there too, along with a group of 7-ft-tall grey humanoids with webbed hands and feet
The humanoids explained that the brains were translation devices that enabled them to communicate telepathically with humans. Then they showed Hodges a series of holographic images of atomic explosions and warned him that humanity was misusing its power. "Take the time to understand yourselves," they advised. "The time draws near when you shall need to!"
Alien Prophecy
Hodges believed that the entities had implanted a "translator cell" in his brain in order to maintain contact with him. Indeed, he thought that thousands of people had been given similar implants.
Soon he began to receive telepathic messages from the humanoids. They predicted that war would break out in the Middle East in 1983 and spread to Europe. Nuclear weapons would be used, after which the aliens would contact Mankind openly. The prophecies proved inaccurate in every detail.
